Hi!

I’m Nicholas D. Nguyen, born and raised in Houston, TX. As a young, introverted child, an interest in visual arts helped me explore my creativity and express myself. Through the creative process, I learned to be open to new things and try different methods to solving a design problem or making art. With the encouragement of family, teachers and friends, I earned a BFA in Design at the University of Texas at Austin in 2010.

My approach to creativity is emotional—emotional responses beget memories. When I’m laying out a spread for a magazine, designing the headline or selecting the photos, I ask myself, What do I feel when I read a story? What do I want others to feel? Or if I’m recipe-testing and styling food, do I think that the end result looks like it was prepared with care and love?

I was the lucky Creative Director of Pilates Style, Chile Pepper and H Texas magazines for nearly 8 years. Then, I started a new chapter in advertising as a designer at Richards/Carlberg before moving on to a Senior Designer position at the University of Houston for the Office of the Provost.

My passion in communications and promoting the success of students and faculty led me to my current position as the Digital Media Program Manager at the UH Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design. There, I oversee the college’s digital platforms, including the website and social media. Since working at the Hines College, I’ve been instrumental in developing the college’s newsroom website and helped with launching its magazine, DIMENSION.

When I’m not juggling work and projects, I’m busy being a cat dad, trying new foods, dreaming about future trips and working on my Pilates practice.
